Middle School basketball teams finish season with wins

The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams finished the 2015-16 season with wins over Liberty on Saturday, March 12.

Girls - Wellsboro 37, Liberty 6

The young Lady Hornets capped a 17-2 season with a 37-6 blow out against Liberty. Wellsboro led 18-0 after the first quarter as Cathryn Brought went on a rampage with 14 points in the quarter. The Lady Hornets increased their lead to 24-3 by halftime, and outscored Liberty 13-3 in the second half for the easy win.

"Our girls got it going early and made it easy on me with an 18 point lead after the 1st quarter," said head coach Darrell Morris. "It was nice for all our girls to get to play a lot and contribute in the last game of the season. They had a great season and I feel fortunate to have been able to work with this group."

Morris now has an 83-20 record following his fifth year as head coach.

Cathryn Brought had 16 points, 3 steals, and 3 assists, Jaime Palmer had 12 points and 3 rebounds, and Chelsea Morris had 3 points and 2 rebounds. Nina Coolidge (6 rebounds), Georgia Macensky (3 rebounds), and Liza Manning (4 rebounds) added 2 points each.

Lauren Singer had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, Emma Palmer had 1 rebound, 2 steals, and 2 assists, Jena Boyce had 3 assists and 1 rebound, and Kayla Mengee added 4 rebounds and a steal.

The B team won 15-5 to finish the year with 14-2 record. Bri Tuttle and Chelsie English scored 4 points each, Breighanna Kemp scored 3 points, while Faith Avery and Bailey Monks added 2 points each.

"Coach Kristen West did an outstanding job with our B-Team and the improvement in those girls from the 1st practice until now is really amazing," continued Morris. "They all played so well together and cheered for each other. They really helped to make it a fun year for everyone around them."

Boys - Wellsboro 51, Liberty 26

The Hornets ended the season on an eight-game winning streak following their win over Liberty. The Hornets outscored Liberty 19-10 in the first, but struggled in the second with just 4 points. Despite the struggle, Wellsboro still maintained a 23-13 lead at halftime.

The Hornets broke the game open in the third quarter by outscoring Liberty 13-6 and outscored them 28-13 in the second half for the win.

Three Hornets scored in double figures on the day, led by Joseph Grab with 19, Billy Lechler with 17, and Carson Davis with 13. Karter Whitmer added the final 2 points on the day.

"I told the boys this is our last game so leave everything on the court and that's what they did," said head coach Jason Greenfield. "Our press was greatand caused turnovers and we were able to capitalize on them to get easy buckets. It was an all around great game.

"I just want to congratulate the players on a great year and for the 8th graders I am going to miss them next year it has been a blast. I hope I taught them how to be good basketball players but more importantly how to be good people in general."

The B team dropped their final game 15-8 to finish the season 12-2. Will Poirier led the team with 4 points on the day.
