For the first time in head coach Todd Outman's career the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team topped Lewisburg.
"It was a great game, first time we've ever beaten them and that was in the back of our minds," Outman said. "The kids just played well today. They shot the ball well and we didn't have a lot of turnovers."
After a 13-8 first quarter by the Hornets the team really caught fire in the second. Wellsboro's swarming defense caused numerous Lewisburg turnovers that led the 22 Wellsboro points. After not scoring in the first senior Quinn Henry took over in the second with 12 points."
The Hornets outscored the Green Dragons 22-10 in the quarter to take a 35-18 lead at halftime.
"I thought it was a great game for Quinn," Outman said about Henry. "He's been struggling a little bit shooting the three, finishing layups and has had a few too many turnovers, but he played a great game today. Having Dalton Prough back is a huge advantage for us. He did awesome again today. I thought Tanner Button coming off the bench playing their best player the way he did in man-to-man was huge as well.
"They just played really well today. Everthing clicked and that's the result you'll get."
Wellsboro kept up their defensive pressure on the second half started, forcing Lewisburg to turn the ball over 24 times for the game. The Hornets held Lewisburg under 10 points for the quarter while putting up 18 points to blow the game open. As the fourth quarter started, Wellsboro led 53-24.
Both teams started subbing midway through the final quarter with the game out of reach. Wellsboro outscored Lewisburg 13-11, led by junior Hunter Brown with 6 points. When the final buzzer sounded, Wellsboro won 66-35.
Henry led all scorers with 17 points. Prough and junior Brandyn Tuttle both had 10 points, senior Nic Ingerick finished with 9, and junior Holden Kennedy added 7 off the bench. Senior Collin Pietropola scored 4 points, freshman Joseph Grab scored 2 and Button finished with 1.
Tuttle grabbed 8 rebounds and made 3 assists, Prough had 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals, and Brown finished with 6 rebounds.
Lewisburg won the JV game 41-28 handing the Hornets their first loss of the season. Grab led Wellsboro with 11 points.
The win improves the Varsity team's record to 4-1 (2-0 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, December 19 at home against Cowanesque Valley.
