A career-high 27 points from senior Cathryn Brought propelled the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team to a 65-52 win over rival North Penn-Mansfield on Monday, December 23.

"I am extremely proud of the girls. They fought the entire game and never gave up being down at half time," head coach Maureen Poirier said. "We game out the second half with a defensive adjustment, attacked the paint offensively, and rebounded well. The girls wanted this game and did what was needed to win. I love the desire and heart the entire team played with tonight."

The Lady Hornets trailed 14-13 after the first quarter and 31-23 at halftime. A monster, 19-point third quarter, followed by a 24-point fourth quarter pushed Wellsboro to the victory over their rivals.

After just 5 points in the first half, Brought turned it on in the second half with 22 points and shot 14-of-16 at the foul line to lead all scorers. Sophomore Emma Coolidge and junior Bailey Monks also had career nights, scoring 15 points each. Freshman Jordyn Abernathy added 6 points and junior Sarah Mosher rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Coolidge grabbed 8 rebounds and had 3 steals, Abernathy and Monks added 7 rebounds, and Brought recorded 4 assists.

JoAnne McNamara had 21 to lead Mansfield while Emma Palmer scored 8 points.

The win improves the Lady Hornets to 2-3 (2-1 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Friday, January 3 at North Penn-Liberty.
