Middle School Hornets sweep weekend, Monday series with CV

The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams came home with 4 wins against Cowanesque Valley on Saturday, March 13 and Monday, March 15, 2021.
Monday games
The Wellsboro Boys Junior High Basketball Team defeated Cowanesque Valley 30-22. The Hornets led 10-9 after the first quarter and trailed 14-13 at halftime but clutch 3-point shooting in the second half allowed the Hornets to lead 21-16 after three quarters and hold on for the victory.
"We were able to knock down some timely 3-point shots in the second half tonight which proved to be the difference," said coach Kyle Smith. "We continued to play with confidence despite trailing at halftime which was also encouraging. The boys are playing good team basketball right now!"
The Hornet B Team won 36-2. Jonathan Carl scored 13 points, Luke Rothermel scored 9 points, Jacob Baldwin scored 5 points, Landen Wescott scored 3 points, Marek Mascho, Payton Yawger and Owen Stevens each scored 2 points.
The girls game another one basket game with Wellsboro coming away with the 44-42 win. Wellsboro had a ten point lead going into halftime. CV came out and outscored Wellsboro 18-8 in the third quarter to tie the game at 32 each.
Paige Logsdon had 4 points, 4 blocks and 6 rebounds, Chloe Brandenburg had 16 points, 3 steals and 2 assists, Raegan Watkins-Bourret had 14 points and 3 steals, and LeAnna Fuentes had 8 points.
"We switched some things up defensively resulting in us jumping out to a good lead in the first half," head coach Janelle Tombs said. "CV adjusted offensively at half time and beat us to loose balls taking a six point lead in the second half. In the end, we regained control of the pace of the game and found our drive to win. It was a good basketball game to watch.
Wellsboro's B Team won 25-7. Jordan Rumsey had 6 points, Lilah Paredes had 5 points, Myia Schoonover and Alyssa Chilson each had 4 points, and Lily Wagner, Megan Robbins and Cassie Solow had 2 points each.
Saturday games
On Saturday the Wellsboro boys defeated Cowanesque Valley on Saturday, 43-35. The Hornets started fast and led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Cowanesque responded with a 15-7 run to take a 22-20 lead at halftime. The young Hornets then rallied in the third quarter to retake the lead and had a 32-29 advantage entering the fourth quarter. The Hornets then outscored the Indians 11-6 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
"We started strong again, which is important on the road, but the Indians hung tough, so we had to play a complete game. Today was a good test for the boys because they faced adversity and pressure and handled it well," said Coach Smith. "We made our free throws and that allowed us to build a lead in the second half. I thought the team responded extremely well after trailing at halftime. They are playing with confidence right now and that is great to see!"
Mitchel Lechler led the Hornets with 14 points, Micah Vickery had 9 points, Micaiah Fitch added 8 points, EJ Keck had 5 points, Marek Mascho scored 5 points and Drayden McGee added 2 points.
The Hornets B team also won 28-8. Luke Rothermel scored 8 points, Jacob Baldwin scored 6 points, Drayden McGee and Owen Stevens scored 4 points each and Marek Mascho, Payton Yawger, and Jonathan Carl all scored 2 points.
In the girls game the young Lady Hornets won another close game with Wellsboro beating CV, 40-37.
"We had a quick start then hit a wall in the middle of the first quarter that went into halftime," said Coach Tombs. "Our defense picked up in the 3rd quarter and we were able to tie it up going into the fourth. CV hustles and keeps constant pressure on you. Our girls were able to persevere coming away with the win."
Paige Logsdon had 14 points, 4 steals, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks, Chloe Brandenburg had 18 points, 2 steals, and 3 rebounds, Raegan Watkins-Bourret had 2 points, 3 steals and 3 assists, LeAnna Fuentes had 4 points, Maddie Losinger had 2 assists, and Megan Robbins had 2 points.
Wellsboro's B team won 26-8. Jordan Rumsey and Myia Schoonover each had six points while Lily Wagner, Alyssa Chilson, and Megan Robbins each had 4 points.
Wellsboro concludes their season today at home against Williamson.
