McClure Becomes New Three-Point Leader

Senior Peyton McClure became the new Wellsboro all-time three-point king following the Hornets' 61-42 win over Cowanesque Valley on Saturday, January 28.

McClure hit five three-pointers in Saturday afternoon's game, the third time in five games he has done so. McClure now takes over with 172 (and counting) three-pointers made for his career, surpassing former Hornet Michael Pietropola's 168. McClure also sits 2nd all-time behind Jamie Jones (75) for three-pointers made in a single season with 70.

"It's exciting to finally break it," McClure said of surpassing the all-time mark. "I'm grateful for all of my great teammates that made this possible."

"I’m happy for Peyton," head coach Steve Adams said. "He has the shooter mentality. He's worked hard to become a good shooter and he is a big part of our offense. To get a milestone that puts you as the top three-point shooter is a big accomplishment. What I am really proud of him for is that the team has always been, and will continue, to be his focus. He plays the part of a shooter and has done it with class. I'm very proud of Peyton."

As a team the Hornets hit 11 three's in the game, 4 from senior Conner Adams and one each from junior Caden Smith and freshman Aaron Kirk.

The Hornets started out with a big opening quarter, outscoring the Indians 19-12. They backed up that first quarter by doubling up CV 14-7 to take a 33-19 lead into the locker room. The Hornets further extended their lead with a 15-6 third quarter to lead 48-25 heading into the fourth. The Indians did win the final frame, outscoring Wellsboro 17-13, but the damage was already done as they Hornets won their 8th straight.

Adams and McClure both finished with a game-high 19 points to lead Wellsboro. Senior Cameron Brought added 8, Kirk chipped in 7, Smith and junior Hayes Campbell finished with 3 points apiece, and freshman Marek Mascho added 2 points. Smith added 8 assists to his point total, Adams made 6 assists and came up with 3 steals, McClure made 4 assists and a steal, Campbell had 6 steals and 9 rebounds, and Brought pulled down 11 boards and made 4 steals and 2 assists.

Fletcher Good and Jordan Vargeson led Cowanesque with 11 points each.

Wellsboro won the JV game 56-33, breaking a three-game losing streak to improve to 5-9 on the year. Sophomore EJ Keck led the Hornets with 17 points and Kirk added 15.

The win improves the Hornets' to 12-4 overall and 10-1 in the NTL Large School Division. The team is back in action at Towanda on Tuesday.
