Hornets Drop NTL Opening Game To NEB

The Wellsboro Boys Basketball fell to 0-2 to begin the season following a 49-40 loss to Northeast Bradford in their first NTL cross-over game of the year on Tuesday, December 10.

The Hornets trailed 9-6 after the opening quarter then found themselves in a shootout with the Panthers in the 2nd, being outscored 16-15, to trail 25-21 at halftime. Northeast Bradford outscored Wellsboro 7-5 in the 3rd and later 17-14 in the final frame.

Two Hornets scored in double figures on the night, led by senior Mitchel Lechler with 16 and junior Jonathan Carl with 11. Junior Luke Rothermel and sophomore Colin Fletcher added 4 points apiece, senior Lucas Cuneo and junior Marek Mascho chipped in with 2 points each, and freshman Griffin Morral added a point. Cuneo made 3 steals, Rothermel grabbed 8 boards, Lechler added 6 rebounds and 3 assists, and Carl grabbed 5 rebounds.

Eli Stanton had 17 for the Panthers while Cooper Brown added 12.

The Hornets picked up their first win of the season in the JV game, edging the Panthers 50-47 in overtime. Wellsboro trailed 38-23 heading into the 4th quarter, and outscored the Panthers 20-5 to tie the game up. Fletcher led all scorers with a game-high 28 points.

The Hornets are back on the court on Thursday against Sayre.
