Lady Hornets Fall To Rival Mansfield, 39-32

Rival North Penn-Mansfield defeated Wellsboro 39-32 in a NTL Large School Division match up on Friday, January 3.

Both teams struggled from the field early as the Lady Tigers only led 5-2 after the first quarter.

"The girls battled all night and never gave up until the end, It was a very sloppy game," head coach Maureen Poirier said. "Going forward we need to have better ball control. Turnovers are limiting us on the offensive end while giving the opponent too many easy buckets."

Both teams shook off the rust in the 2nd quarter with Wellsboro outscoring North Penn-Mansfield 13-11 to cut the lead down to 16-15 at the half. North Penn-Mansfield, however, went on a 16-8 run in the 3rd quarter to put some breathing room between themselves and the Lady Hornets, leading 32-23 heading into the final frame.

Wellsboro managed to outscore the Lady Tigers again in the 4th quarter, 9-7, but were unable to close the gap and pull off the win.

"Most of the players are new to varsity basketball," continued Poirier. "Keep watching as the girls continue to improve and surprise a few teams going forward."

Senior Chloe Brandenburg led the Lady Hornets with 12 points, senior Paige Logsdon added 9, and freshman Teagan Novinger added 6 points. Junior Lily Wagner and freshman Kate Bryant added 3 points and 2 points, respectively.

Kameron Lightener led all scorers with 18 points for North Penn-Mansfield.

In the JV game Wellsboro rallied in the 4th quarter to edge the Lady Tigers, 24-22. They trailed 16-14 and outscored Mansfield 10-6 for the win. Novinger led Wellsboro with 5 points while junior Sophia Yoder and freshman Madison Nagy had 4 points each.

The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 3-3 (1-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action at Towanda on Monday.
