Hornets Drop Home Opener To NEB

The Wellsboro Boys Basketball team suffered a 58-50 home-opening loss to Northeast Bradford Thursday.

The game was close from start to finish with NEB slightly edging the Hornets in each quarter.

NEB led 14-12 after the first and 20-16 at the half before both teams went on a scoring barrage in the third quarter. The Hornets outscored the Panthers 23-22, cutting the lead down to 42-39 heading into the final frame, but NEB against outscored Wellsboro 16-11 to hang on for the eight-point win.

"We didn’t start out mentally prepared to play," head coach Ron Doughtie said. "We need to clean up the misses on layups. Left a lot of points on the floor on missed layups in the first half. The second half we played better and had much more energy, but we can't come out like we did and expect to win games against good teams."

Senior Jonathan Carl led Wellsboro with 14 points while junior Colin Fletcher was also in double figures with 11. Senior Marek Mascho finished with 8, sophomore Griffin Morral added 7, sophomore Ransom Schultz pitched in 6, and senior Luke Rothermel and junior Ethan Keane added two points apiece.

Carl pulled down 8 rebounds to go along with 2 assists and 2 steals. Morral finished with 4 rebounds and an assist, Mascho and Keane both had 3 boards, and Schultz grabbed two boards. Fletcher added a pair of steals, Mascho dished out a pair of assists, and Rothermel and freshman James Doughtie both blocked shots.

NEB's Cooper Brown led all scorers with 20 points.

Wellsboro won the JV game 51-36 to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Sophomore Kody Enck led the team with 12 points and sophomore Keegan VanZile added 11.

Wellsboro (0-2, 0-1 NTL Large School Division) hosts Hughesville Saturday.
